How it is spelled depends upon what language you are writing it in. I
learned about it while studying Russian in Germany, and we called it
"Glagolitik". I have no idea how we spell it in English, since I've
never studied it in an English-speaking country. And it isn't really
*that* ancient, BTW ... around A.D. 800 or so.

It is the original alphabet developed by the monk Cyril for use for
the Slavic languages. It didn't take off at all, and Cyril later
developed Cyrillic (thus the name, funny about that, eh?), which was
basically just a variation of the Greek alphabet.

Note that Glagolitic was not in any way based on the Greek alphabet.
It was a totally different concoction. Also, it was purely a phonetic
alphabet (can't remember the technical term for that, but it isn't
really called an "alphabet" as such). Each phoneme in the language
had it's own letter.

I've got lots of info I can dig up for you if you give me more
specific questions. I can even photocopy sample texts and snail
mail them to you, if you like. I also have a lot of bibliographic
references if you are interested.
