Indeed, you should not have.  Words that come into Romance and Germanic
from IE do not have (in general) the same consonants.  In particular H in
Germanic is
generally C in Romance.  Perhaps I didn't make my self clear (although it looks
clear) that the etymological dictionary I consulted specifically stated
that this word went from Old Frankish (the Germanic language of the
Franks) into Old French.  You have better information?
