The typical reaction to new inventions is that most people consider
them unnecessary. The telephone was initially considered to be a
useless toy for rich people. The car was similarly considered useless,
since it offered no advantage over a horse carriage (and you even had
to buy gas in a pharmacy!). The metric system was considered
unnecessary for most people. Most physicists consider the developments
of the last decades in mathematics and computer science unnecessary,
and continue to use Fortran and impose it on the younger
generation. And many people consider the whole EU unnecessary (and if
it is to remain in its current state, I tend to agree).

Fortunately, there are always some people who recognize the promises
of a new idea before they become evident for everyone.
