I have placed my patches to version 3.00 on
ftp.dai.ed.ac.uk:/pub/vision/src/xv-3.00-hips-patches.tar.gz

It load HIPS images, and you may also include a colormap in the HIPS
file by including
	+COLORMAP <mapname>
in the description section. Builtin <mapname>s are {grey, heat, hues, range},
and others are searched for as <mapname>.PAL files in the local directory,
or $IM2HOME/etc/palettes
