I have been asked to post this so that it reaches the widest possible group
of interested people. Sorry if the group in which you read this does not
seem appropriate, but I wanted to reach researchers and job applicants!

University of Otago, New Zealand
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory,
Department of Computer and Information Science

PhD Scholarship available
=========================

Topic: "To Develop A Computational Theory of Natural Language Understanding"

The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Otago in
New Zealand is offering a PhD scholarship for natural language
understanding research.

We have a group of researchers at Otago with strong interests in natural
language research and the current team include: Prof. Philip Sallis,
Dr. Nikola Kasabov (Information Science), Prof. Richard Sutton,
Ms Nicola Peart (Law Faculty), Dr. Claudia Brugman (English and Linguistics),
and Dr. Wai-Kiang Yeap (Computer Science) and two Master students. It
is possible that a postdoctoral fellow will soon join the team. Other
strong activities in the AI Lab. include cognitive maps, neural networks,
fuzzy logic, speech processing, expert systems, and computer vision.

Applicants should have a good Honours or Masters degree in computer
science (especially majoring in AI and strong in LISP). The research is
expected to commence not later than 1 June 1995. The Scholarship would be
for up to three years at an annual emolument of NZ$12,000 plus tuition fees
at the level payable to a New Zealand student. Note that citizens of
Australia, France, and Germany pay the same fees as New Zealanders; the
amount for next year is not set yet but is expected to remain close to
NZ $2,000 per year. Citizens of other countries pay overseas
student fees of around NZ $15,000 per year; these scholarships are not
intended for such applicants unless they provide evidence of sufficient
additional funding to support themselves during the period of study.

Informal enquiries and/or more details about the research are available
from Dr. Wai-Kiang Yeap (Phone: +64 3 479 8585, Fax: +64 3 4798529,
email: coscwky@rivendell.otago.ac.nz)

Applications, quoting the postgraduate research topic, close with the
Registry on the 1st of October 1994. However, consideration of applications
will continue until a suitable candidate is selected. Application forms
are available from Miss E H A Knight , Scholarship Officer,
phone: +64 3 479 8077, Fax: +64 3 474 1607,
email: ann.knight@stonebow.otago.ac.nz. These forms should be
completed and forwarded to Miss E H A Knight, Scholarship Officer,
University of Otago, P.O. Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Dr. W.K. Yeap,
Director,
AI Laboratory.
