OK. Since a couple of people wanted 'emotion' defined, here goes! (Don't
bite my head off please. It is to clarify things that were unknown (to me
at least) that I put in the first post. Yes it was I!)

Emotion is (practically) the state of the machine (person, animal...)
which causes different responses to the same stimulus with the same
conditions at different times (pauses for air!). So why bother? Well,
doing some things PRODUCES desirable and undesirable emotional states,
which then change the nature of the response in future similar situations.
(I think that this is known as 'Learning' to use a technical term 8-b )

What are the side-effects of such a model? Firstly, the response to
something will be different for two reasons: previous experience (Was it
nice last time?) and current mood (Am I too tired to enjoy myself?).
Secondly, the new state can be compared with the old one to provide clues
to future behaviour (such as why do psychotics 'enjoy' murdering and how
did they get to that pattern of behaviour - Was it Society? No teddy-bear?
Genes? Brain damage? etc). OK, the second point is more emotive, but then
that is waht we are talking about. Emotions!
