In my view the following definition applies:

Words are the meanings we assign to written patterns or to
sequences of phonemes. When speaking face to face, there is probably
a lot more information to used when assigning accurate meaning to
the vocal patterns than when processing written ones. Mathematics
is a rigorous form of written communication.
