If what you say would be the most important consideration we should get
rid of our decimal system and go for a base-12 system. For a world that
counts using a decimal system the metric system is the most obvious.

They are?????? Please explain, I've never found the kilometers nor the centimeters
(nor any other meter for that matter, especially a meter of beer :) anything but
useful. So if you think they are better as you say it might be worthwhile for all
others, including myself, to try to give an objective statement as to WHY you think
they are better.

>and is that which the metric sytem shall never have; it is elegant.

Ahh come on! That's solely a matter of personal taste.
All your inches and feet and such elegant? Why, my foor isn't even +/- 33cm!
And when you now just a little bit of latin you can easily recognize the
different factors when using the metric system (and it works for ALL measures!):
centi for 1/100th, milli for 1/1000th, Kilo for a 1000 times, Mega for a 1000000
times etc. So you have your millimeters, millivolts, milliliters, milli<xxxxxx>
Talking about elegant! ;) (oops! Now I do it myself *grin*)
