As would I.  I've put together a bit of code that sends SMTP messages.   
It's fairly rough at the moment--it doesn't handle multiple recipients or  
a server's refusal to deliver mail, but it can compose a message OK....

I'd be delighted to collaborate with someone on this, to use someone  
else's code if it's better, or to post mine if there's not a better  
solution available.  I was surprised not to find something like this in  
the archives.
