I have used a 6811 microcontroller. I just use a 10k pull-up resister on the reset pin and touch it to ground when I reset. This works for my application since it has to wait (after start-up or reset) for an external computer to start talking to it.

If the power to the microprocessor fails and comes back on nothing will save you. The microprocessor will do a reset.
