Edmund Scientific Company sells small robots that walk or drive
and react to the environment. Their number is 1 (609)573-6260.
They have a catalog the has a page of robots. Prices are between
$40 - $100, most are between $55 and $65 cheaper that a dog or
cat (with shots).

Another option is a lizard. I don't know of many people that
are allergic to a lizard. They don't have fur and are NOT slimy.
Lizards are cold blooded and enjoy just resting on a warm hand.
My brother and I would catch flies, put them in the lizards cage
and watch the lizard catch the fly right out of the air(very exciting).

Robots are very predictable, their batteries run down and need to be
recharged, and get dull in a very short time(unless they are constantly
modified).
