Most of the ones in discussion here (Rug Warrior and various homebrew
Miniboard and 6.270 based stuff) will run you about $150-200 by the time
you're through. The stuff that's cheaper than that doesn't usually have the
capability of being programmed, and you're stuck with whatever response
modes were built into it. There's some from FischerTechnic that cost
nearly as much, but are more mechanically oriented (building blocks), and a
line from Owi Inc called the MOVIT OWIKIT that's only about $50 or so, but
they're not programmable at all from what I can tell. The Owi stuff I saw
at an educational supply store here in Phoenix, the FAQ says there's pix and
whatnot in the Edmund Scientific catalog about 'em. They're probably more
in line with what you're looking for, but from the price I'd guess they use
hard-coded logic boards, not anything you could change easily. If you want
something that's as dumb as a spaniel and as exciting as watching a cat
sleep, it's probably close.
