Craig. The latest versions of the 8051 core by Dallas Semiconductor have
EEPROM for code and a built-in downloader from a three wire interface from
the parallel port and the program is free or you can just use a modem
program. They also have versions with LOTS of either kind of internal
memory! Even Atmel these days has Flashram for code, same as EEPROM except
it has to be erased and overwritten all at once, and they're cheaper!
We're headed very quickly for out the parallel port type uControllers of
the 8051 family which need only a serial OR parallel cable from your clone!
If HC11 can't be found, for less money and greater ease of suppliers you
can go to any number of variations on the 8051! Waiting to cook an EPROM
just isn't done anymore! Many use EPROM emulators out the parallel port
that are easy to build! The HC11 really has no superiority. It was just the
one tapped by some MIT instructors because they had been playing with it!
There is no magic to the thing that isn't duplicated in kind in the 8051
families! People are chasing those things around and causing their own
shortages just because now the small industries are getting credit lines to
buy them up and try to sell YOU all boards with the chip on it ready made
for an ENORMOUS amount!!! Motorola doesn't HAVE to sell them to you if they
can sell hundreds at a time! The MIT worship cult has screwed the pooch on
this one! That's what you get for "find(ing) a bunch of guys who dress alike
and follow(ing) them around!" - Firesign Theater "High School Madness"
on the album "Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers!"
