I don't believe it is out of production. My latest report from Advanced
Microcontroller Div. of Motorola lists a bunch of HC11 parts. You may have
been looking at a specific version that is no longer made, but there are 
dozens of other options.

Unless cost is a driver, I would recommend the 68xxx series, or something
like the 68EC000. These are true 32 bit architectures, which I think you will
find much easier to program than the old-fashioned 8 bit guys. All the
free software goodies like gcc will work with th 68xxx, but not the HC11.
