Several years ago (1984?) I used a device called an Angular Rate Sensor 
made by Watson Industries.  It was a small package (about 3"x1"x1") and it 
put out either an analog or digital signal that was proportional to the 
rate at which it turned about its axis.  As I recall it was about $500 US. 
 I don't know if the company is still in business, but here's the info I 
had on them...
