The Artificial Life group here at UCLA has recently added a Mobile
Robotics Lab. Current research includes investigations of evolutionary
techniques for writing robot software. Prof David Jefferson (and
perhaps also Prof Chuck Taylor) appeared in Discover some time ago.
Chuck and a student have evolved neural nets for robot control using
a mix of simulation and real-world trials (only simple wandering behavior
so far). We are currently investigating the evolution of collision
avoidance using a fleet of 10 real mobile robots.
