I'm not sure if it makes any difference but the Microchip Data Book (1993)
has the same proceedure except at [Hostname:] MCHIPBBS<ENTER>

It also says that The Microchip BBS connection does not use compu$erve
membership services, therefore you do not need Compuserve membership to
join Microchip's BBS! I haven't tried this yet.
