When I was going to Colorado State University back around 1982 they had a
mousetrap car contest. It was a part of their annual Engineering Days
held in the spring. The contest was for the shortest time through a given
length.

The ones I remember seem to have been mostly strings connecting the bail to
an axle. I think there was one that had a gear segment driving a pinion on
the axle. The segment traveled past the pinion in order to allow it to
coast after the bail completed its travel.
