I saw, in the robofaq, a section on LEGO projects.  It mentioned that MIT had 
papers on LEGO projects.  FTP to kame.media.mit.edu and look in pub/el-memos
for files called memo8*. It is not an ASCII file.

Also it mentioned that LEGO Dacta (1800-527-8339) sells the technic product lineand has a Technic Resource Set - general parts kits for $200.00.  Although I     it does not say what it includes.  i.e. gears, motor, etc. and thats quite
a bit of money for legos ;-).
