I used Makita and Sears cordless drills for power for my "Waldo" Lunar
Teleop vehicle, and they work quite well. The low-end Makita drills
come with a variable speed drive module on the trigger switch that can
be farily easily converted to an analog->PWM driver, while the Sears
lowend drills come completely apart, revealing a nice planetary-drive
gearmotor nestled inside the case. Six of One, half dozen of the
other...

The only caveat is that these kinds of things are not _really_ made
for continuous duty, I had to add fan cooling to keep my motors from
melting.
