From what I understand the XC version of chips are versions that are
chips that are from test production runs or something and were not
intended to be sold, but are perfectly fine. so they usually give them
out as samples or free to people through their university support
group.

DIFFERENCES:
1. the outer markings don't say anything intelligible like 68hc11e2

2. I've heard of one case where the corner leads that go to a crystal
   were slightly bent so they shorted (WATCH OUT FOR THIS ONE!)

3. Out of the 12 that I've used, about 8 had their config register set
   to 0x3f instead of 0xff which I think is the normal untouched setting.
   0x3f just remaps the EEPROM.
