I am interested in finding inexpensive ways to sence the xy position
inside a frame.. (12"x12"). It has to be a non physical contact method.

An expensive way is to set up an infra red emiting/detecting grid.
At about 3 leds per inch thats 72 emitters and 72 detectors and all
associated drivers.

The resolution does not have to be great. About 1" so there would be 12
x/y points.

The objects being detected would be about the diameter of a pencil or
larger.

I am curious about ultra sonic or a small rangefinder in each coordinate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..
