You can do much better by giving Dinsmore Instrument Corp a call.
313-744-1330. They sell a very tiny (.5" cylinder, .5" tall) digital
compass. It has 4 outputs (N,W,E,S), and you can look for pairs to
get 8 direction granularity. You can use two slightly offset to get
better resolution. $12/ea.

Since they have 12 leads, (4 Vcc, 4 Gnd, and 4 Vout) you can also order
a little PCB board that has 6 pads, Vcc, Gnd, and 4 Vouts. Nice part.

Oh, I almost forgot, they have an analog version with just sine/cosine
outputs for all you analog types out there.
