I was surpised not to see mention of this here. ...

MIT Nanotechnology Study Group

Tuesday, May 5 1992: Piezoelectric Micromotors for Microrobots

Anita Flynn, MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
8th floor playroom, MIT AI Lab (NE43), 7:30pm

Dr. Flynn will discuss the construction of millimeter-scale
piezoelectric motors for use in tiny "gnat" robots. Piezoelectric
motors overcome the problems currently associated with electrostatic
micromotors such as low torque, friction, and the need for high
voltages. More importantly, they may offer a much simpler mechanism
for coupling power out. Flynn's group proposes to combine new robot
control systems with piezoelectric motors and micromechanics to create
small, cheap, autonomous robots.

Our regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each
month, at 7:30pm, in room 773 of the MIT AI Lab, 545 Technology Square
(MIT building NE43). Thanks again to the MIT Graduate Student Council
for supporting our educational programs in the MIT community.
