First let me say I have very little knowledge of NNs.

I am currently researching an application for a PhD which will involve
analysing signals from a piezo-electric sensor. I wish to be able to tell
whether the sensor has, for instance, been hit with a hammer, cut with a
hacksaw or various other forms of 'attack'.
Speed is not critical at this stage.

Any advice on what software to use, data reduction or anything else
relevant would be greatly appreciated.

I have a mechanical engineering background which doesn't help in
understanding NNs!

Thanks,
Richard.
