                                Four PhD-Student Positions in

Computer Systems Engineering and Intelligent Mechatronical Systems

                           at Halmstad University, Sweden

The positions are placed at the Centre for Computer Architecture (CCA),
which belongs to Halmstad University. The university has about 200
employees and 3700 students and is in the process of rapid growth,
especially on research.

The research area of CCA can be best described as advanced computer
engineering for embedded systems (mechatronical computer systems
engineering). We emphasize the utilisation of adaptive, self-learning
techniques, like artificial neural networks, for measurement, perception
and control in industrial applications, while using massively parallel
computer systems and/or distributed high-performance computer systems.

Today, CCA has eleven employees, of which one is professor and three are
associate professors. All employees work with both research and
education. The latter is mainly related to the Master of Science Program
in Computer Systems Engineering. Post-graduate education for PhD-students
is given in cooperation with other technical universities in Sweden,
mainly with Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg. Currently, the
research is in a significant growing phase, of which one important part
is a long-term research cooperation with a few companies in order to
establish a centre of excellence in mechatronical computer systems
engineering. We have good contacts with recognized research institutes
all over the world. More information about CCA is available on the World
Wide Web at http://www.hh.se/cca.html.

Halmstad is situated at the west coast in the south of Sweden and is
surrounded by beautiful beaches and forests. There are not many towns, at
least in Scandinavia, that can compete with Halmstad when it comes to
beaches and bathing. The versatile nature around Halmstad offers great
opportunities for other outdoor activities like fishing (salmon),
windsurfing, sailing, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, and golf.

The positions are all in the area of Computer Systems Engineering and
Intelligent Mechatronical Systems. Within this area different emphasis
can be given, e.g. the following:

Parallel Computer Architecture, with specialisation in real-time systems
or VLSI implementations.

Self-learning Systems, based on artificial neural networks.

Signal Processing and/or Control Theory, preferably in the area of
sensors and actuators.

The function consists mainly of own research and education, but it also
involves some teaching. Teaching in the form of supervision of project
work is common. In Sweden the PhD degree is obtained in two stages. The
first stage is called "licentiat" degree, which is normally reached
within three years. The second exam leads to the PhD degree, normally
obtained within another three years (total of six years). The position is
limited to a maximum period of six years. The starting salary is about
14.000,- SEK per month.

The function requires a Master of Science degree (or the like) in a
relevant engineering discipline.

As the majority of teachers and researchers in the technical field are
men, women are especially encouraged to apply for the positions. The
positions are open for all nationalities. Teaching in English is common
at Halmstad University. The appointments can start in the first quarter
of 1995 or later upon agreement.
