Subject: Request for info on GA representation issues

Hi,
I'm preparing a presentation on GAs (theoretical and practical
side of GAs). I'm also writing a code for GA where the best representation
to use would be real numbers instead of binary representation.
I'm looking for any references addressing representation issues.
Please, send me e-mail with any references you might have on this topic,
papers addressing this issue are most welcome.
	Thanks in advance.

Subject: question

Hiya all,

I am facing a problem and I would appreciate any help.

I have 36 neural networks forecasting one period ahead movements in
stock prices in 18 countries. Now, I want to create a portfolio, in
which, depending on the maximum return predicted, the system is going
to invest in / or withdraw from particular markets. Now, I also have
several constraints such as x% investment in one market, y% maximum
in emerging markets, z% in bonds, equities and cash etc. etc.

I have formulated the LP model for this, but the problem is that I
have approximately 1400 portfolios to construct. So, assuming that I
spend about 30 minutes on one portfolio using LINDO PC, the mind
boggles at the total amount of time that I would have to spend on the
entire lot. So not wanting my mind to be boggled :-<, I have decided
to ask to assistance of this group.

So the particular questions are. (1) is it possible to get a GA to
carry out the same type of exercise as is possible using an LP
(linear programming) model ? (2) If yes, which GA software,
(preferably free, definitely MSDOS or windows) (3) Is there anyone
else doing the same thing in the wide world outside? (4) I heard
about a GA software called as Evolution Machine in Germany. I just
cannot get the ftp to work to get the software, any help on this,
i.e. has anyone got any information whether this software exists on
any other ftp? (5) is there any software which can help me automate
this process in Linear Programming, preferably free, but then the
world is not perfect, so perhaps low cost ones?

I would be eternally grateful for any kind of help. I shall be
posting this SOS to other groups, so apologies if you get this more
than once.

Cheers
BD

                                CALL FOR PAPERS

                                  IEEE Expert

                               Special Track on
Applications of Genetic and Evolutionary Programming

IEEE Expert announces a Special Track on Applications of Genetic and
Evolutionary Programming, edited by Peter Angeline. A Special Track is a
collection of papers united by a theme that will run over several issues.
Previous Special Tracks in IEEE Expert include object-oriented programming in
AI, AI applications in process systems, knowledge acquisition, functional
modeling of devices, case-based reasoning, connectionist applications, and
genetic algorithms and their applications.

For the Special Track on Applications of Genetic and Evolutionary Programming,
suggested topics for submissions include, but are not limited to:
characterizations of appropriate applications for genetic programming and/or
evolutionary programming, studies comparing genetic programming and
evolutionary programming, comparisons with other search and learning
algorithms, parallel and hardware implementation issues, and applications in
specific fields.

IEEE Expert is a magazine of applied AI serving as a bridge between the
research community and the user community. It aims to publish original papers
that transfer to the user community ideas and tools that come out of research
and development. Clear, not overly formal, writing is essential. Its readers
are users, developers, managers, researchers, and purchasers who are interested
in databases, expert systems, and artificial intelligence, with particular
emphasis on applications. They want to learn about the tools, techniques,
concepts, aids, and systems that have potential for real-world applications.
Conceptual or theoretical papers are welcome, provided they serve the above
function of clarifying and presenting ideas of potential importance to
applications.

Submissions should be written according the IEEE Expert style. The final
articles should be about 8-9 printed pages, with about 10-12 references. All
papers submitted will be carefully reviewed. Papers accepted on technical
grounds are subject to copy editing by the Managing Editor's staff for clarity
and expressiveness. Authors are asked to submit six copies (hard-copy only), of
their paper by June 1, 1994 to the Guest Editor:

                  Granada, Spain, 4-6 June, 1995

It is a pleasure to announce the forthcoming 3rd European Conference on
Artificial Life (ECAL95).

Despite its short life, Artificial Life (AL) is already a mature scientific
field. In trying to discover the rules of life and extract its essence so that
it can be implemented in different media, AL research has led us to a
better understanding of a large set of interesting biology-related problems,
such as self organization, emergence, origins of life, self-reproduction,
computer viruses, learning, growth and development, animal behavior,
ecosystems, autonomous agents, adaptive robotics, etc.

The Conference will be organized into Scientific Sessions, Demonstrations,
Videos and Comercial Exhibits. Scientific Sessions will consist of Lectures
(invited), Oral Presentations, and Posters.

The site of ECAL95 will be the city of Granada, located in the south of Spain,
in the region of Andalucia. Granada was the last moors site in the Iberic
Peninsula, and it has the inheritance of their culture with the legacy of
marvelous constructions such as the Alhambra and the Gardens of Generalife.

ECAL95 will be organized in collaboration with the International Workshop on
Artificial Neural Networks (IWANN95) to be held at Malaga (Costa del Sol,
Spain), June 7-9, 1995. These places are only one hour apart by car.
Special inscription fees will be offered to those attending both meetings.

Subject: ECAI-94 WORKSHOP ON APPLIED GENETIC AND OTHER EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

ECAI-94 WORKSHOP ON
APPLIED GENETIC AND OTHER EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS
Amsterdam, August 9, 1994

One of the reasons for the growing interest in genetic and other
evolutionary algorithms is their good performance on a wide scale
of problems. However, practical applications may raise issues
beyond the scope of classical models. The goal of this workshop is
to cumulate knowledge on the application of EAs and in particular
to study changes to and extensions of the standard approaches.
Topics of interest include but are not restricted to:

o problem elicitation and representation,
o non-standard genotypes and recombination operators,
o genetic programming,
o handling constraints,
o boosting performance,
o combination with other techniques, e.g. local search, neural nets,
  knowledge based systems,
o advantages and disadvantages of EAs w.r.t. other techniques.

About 10-12 of the participants will have the opportunity to
introduce his/her work in the form of a short presentation. Other
persons interested in the subject may also participate in a limited
number. Besides the presentations, substantial time will be allocated
for discussion and comparison of the presented results. Our hope is
that insights gained at the workshop may facilitate further
applications and support new theory.

SUBMISSIONS
Two kinds of contributions are invited

o papers that describe successful practical applications,
o papers investigating relevant issues by extensive test sessions on
  a test bench.

In both cases the problem(s) to be solved and the issue(s) to be
investigated should be clearly described followed by the system
description and experiment setup. Evaluation of the system and
analysis of the test results should be given to support the
conclusions.

Three camera ready copies of a full paper not exceeding 12 pages
(12 point font, single space) including figures and references
should be sent to

              email: ecai-ga@cs.vu.nl

Submission of the PostScript format by e-mail is also possible.
Accepted papers will be included in the workshop proceedings
available at the workshop. In the meantime, the organizers aim
at publication in a special journal issue or book containing the
revised versions of the best papers.

Persons willing to attend the workshop without a presentation
should submit a brief description of their research area or field
of interest. Deadlines for submission and notification are the same
as for papers for presentation.
