Subject: Welcome to new members

We have had a large number of people join the list in the
last few weeks. The newcomers may find the following
information useful:

This mailing list was set up to encourage timely discussion
of genetic algorithms and related related approaches to search
and learning. All are encouraged to submit questions, comments,
observations, etc. I especially encourage authors to submit
abstracts of recent or forthcoming technical reports, conference papers,
journal articles, etc. Reports about works-in-progress are also encouraged.

The following books give a good overview of genetic algorithms:

Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization, and Machine Learning,
D. E. Goldberg, Addison-Wesley: Reading, 1988.

Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems,
J. H. Holland, Univ. Michigan Press: Ann Arbor, MI, 1975.

Induction: Processes of Inference, Learning, and Discovery,
J. H. Holland, K. J. Holyoak, R. E. Nisbett and P. A. Thagard,
MIT Press: Cambridge, MA, 1986.

Genetic Algorithms and Simulated Annealing,
L. Davis (ed.), Pitman: London, 1987.

Proceedings of the First International Conference on
Genetic Algorithms and Their Applications, Pittsburgh, PA.
Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc., 1985.

Genetic Algorithms and Their Applications:
Proceedings of the 2nd Intl. Conf. Genetic Algorithms,
Cambridge, MA. Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc., 1987.

Everybody might want to note that, at long last, NRL has adopted
the domain-style mail adresses. Our new host name is AIC.NRL.NAVY.MIL.

genetic algorithms, search, optimization, machine learning using
genetic algorithms, classifier systems, apportionment of credit
algorithms, relationships to other search and learning paradigms.
Papers discussing specific applications (e.g., OR, engineering,
     science, etc.) are encouraged.

     Important Dates:

10 Feb 89: Submissions must be received by program chair

Subject: DC area Special Interest Group?

This is a request for a show of interest in forming a special
interest group on genetic algorithms in the DC area. One
idea is to meet on a regular basis (monthly?) to discuss
GAs, trade ideas, develop joint research projects, etc.
Please respond directly to me. Thanks.

Subject: Genetic Algorithms as Dynamical Systems

I am interested in studying genetic algorithms as dynamical systems.
That is, as systems where the rate of operator firing is determined by
some differential equation. I am interested in what these
differential equations look like, and how a GA system would behave
(stable, unstable, chaotic) in the face of varying rates of firing in
response to changes in the data environment. This research is in
support of a non-GA reasoning system, the Model Generative Reasoning
system. This system is also an operator-based reasoner, and has other
parallels with GA's.

I would appreciate any pointers to previous research done in this
vein, and/or suggestions on how to proceed.
