Announcing the Intelligent systems for Economics digest (IE-digest)
     -------------------------------------------------------------------

The Intelligent systems for Economics digest aims to act as a forum to
exchange ideas on using `intelligent' techniques to model economic and
financial systems.

Techniques which were originally developed to model psychological and
biological processes are now receiving considerable attention as tools for
modelling and understanding economic and financial processes. These techniques
which include neural networks, genetic algorithms and expert systems are now
being used in a wide variety of applications including the modelling of
economic cycles, modelling of artificial economies, portfolio optimisation and
credit evaluation.

The IE-digest will carry announcements of papers, calls for papers, requests
for information and will act as a medium for researchers to exchange ideas in
this rapidly growing research area. The format of the IE-digest is similar
to other moderated forums such as the "neuron-digest".

A depository has been set up to deposit papers, bibliographies, and software,
which can be accessed via FTP. Past issues of the IE-digest will also be kept
there.

Request for Information on Agent-Based Systems

I am presently researching into agents and agent-based systems. The loose
definition of 'agent' that I use is: "an autonomous entity which performs a set
of actions in response to a matched pattern". An example of the use of this
definition of agents can be seen in the work of M. Travers as part of the MIT
contribution to Apple's Vivarium project. Currently, in my wide reading over
the areas A-Life, OOP, and AI I have come across relatively little material,
but surely there must be some work that has been carried out in response to
Minsky's Society of Mind work! If you know of anything, please e-mail me at the
address given below with the details. If sufficient response is received, I
will post the results of this request back for the benefit of others.

Many thanks, in anticipation.

From: opdyke@ernie.cs.uiuc.edu

I just recently completed my PhD. I am particularly interested in an
academic (preferably tenure track) position, or an industrial or
government research position, in the area of medical informatics.
(A position in biological informatics, particularly related to
object-oriented genome databases, might also be a good match for my
skills and interests.)

I am interested in such a position because I see several areas that match
with my research background and interests, and because it addresses an
application area that is critically important.

-----

Briefly, here is a summary of my relevant research background:

 - PHD/CS: OBJECT-ORIENTED APPLICATION MODELING AND PROGRAM RESTRUCTURING
(SIMILAR TO OODB SCHEMA EVOLUTION). For most of the past four years,
I pursued doctoral studies full time at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign (Computer Science). As my thesis research project,
I investigated program restructuring techniques (similar to database schema
evolution techniques) to support application modeling and software evolution
of object-oriented software programs. I prototyped the approach using the
Common LISP Object System. My research was cited in the September, 1990
CACM special issue on Object-Oriented design, as well as by other sources.
I completed my thesis in late May (1992), and will officially graduate in
   October.

- (KNOWLEDGE-BASED) INTELLIGENT DECISION SUPPORT. For three years prior to
that, I worked in an applied research group at AT&T Bell Labs, investigating
AI (rule-based and frame-based) approaches for intelligent decision support.
During this time, I completed the (graduate level) AI Program at
   DePaul University.

- DIGITAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICES PLANNING. I spent three years
researching the deployment and evolution of digital telecommunications
services at AT&T, and completing an MS/CS degree at the
   University of Wisconsin.

During this time, I was employed/supported by Bell Labs.

-----

Here is a brief summary of my research interests:

Of the medical informatics application areas listed in the Shortliffe (et al)
"Medical Informatics" text (table - page 154), the ones of most interest to me
are:

   - clinical decision-support systems
   - medical record systems
   - patient monitoring systems
   - radiology systems.

I am interested in researching the following medical computer system functions:
decision support, information storage and retrieval, and data analysis.

-----

Having just finished my PhD, I am now back at Bell Labs, but in a division that
is in a weak financial footing and where the focus has been away from
research. To secure a research position now, I may be forced to leave AT&T.
As soon as possible (within a year) I would like to secure a research position.

I would appreciate your advice:

(1) Are you aware of positions available that might match my skills and
interests?

(2) Where should I look for such positions? (Names and email addresses
would help.)

(3) I am planning to attend the SCAMC in Baltimore this November. I would
appreciate advice on:
   - What should I bring along?
   - What groundwork should I lay in advance?
   - What areas/activities should I focus on at the conference?
   - Who should I seek out, and how can I find them?

(4) If I post this message to others in the future, are there any improvements
you suggest I make to it?

Thanks (much) for taking the time to read and respond to this email.
