This is naive. Did the wars leading up to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire
or the bloody revolutions of the 1840's and '50's or the Napoleanic wars
"cure western Europeans of any love of war"? Europe has erupted into
large-scale nationalistic war since the Crusades, and probably before. The
last two (the so-called World Wars) were on a larger scale, but the carnage
of the first did not prevent the second, did it?

I believe that Andy needs to (re)read a few history books. The obvious
cause of the many centuries of warfare is nationalism. The EU is the start
of a process to create lasting peace between historical enemies.

To be sure, the EU is not perfect; in fact it is riddled with problems. Not
the least of these problems is that the diplomats who are sent to Brussels
can not even speak with one another, for there is no common language. I
advocate the adoption of a neutral international language in educational
systems throughout Europe (and the rest of the world) in order to allow
citizens, as well as bureaucrats, to communicate directly with one another.

Perhaps this exposes my naivete' but I believe that people are less likely
to war against people with whom there is good communication.
