It's true-- the Unix world doesn't have a print driver interface like
the Window or the Macintosh.  In Unix, each application must create
its own PostScript.

If you have the Xerox 4900 set to 1200x300 mode (use the LCD panel
to set this) you can send PostScript with continuous tone images
and they will halftone to full resolution.  I would be careful
with "xv" since it wants to reduce 24-bit images to 8-bit images
internally.

As I beleve you know, you may use Unix "lpr", Apple/EtherTalk, or
Novell protocols to send your PostScript file to the Xerox 4900.
