  I remember that the FORTRAN class had the same status as the slide-rule.
  There were no for-credit classes in slide-rule. It was just a tool one
  had to learn.  There were remedial not-for-credit classes.

  The FORTRAN class was also a not-for-credit class. Programming was just
  something one learned to do on the way to doing something really 
  important.  Times have changed. Now we give credit for learning a
  programming language.

  "SLIDE RULE ????????????"  I hear someone saying,
              "What the heck is a slide rule?"
