If I have to pick one of those, I pick "streams of bytes" -- I know I can
deal with that.  Ideally, I'd like to be able to open a file one time in
one mode, another time in another mode.  Producing a hexdump of a file
suggests "stream of bytes", actually manipulating the content suggests
"stream of objects".
