                     UNIX System Administrator
 		     -------------------------

	         Neural Computing Research Group

Dept. of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics

	         Aston University, Birmingham, U.K.

        *  Full details at http://www.ncrg.aston.ac.uk/  *

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced system
administrator to join a thriving research group in the field of neural
computing. The Neural Computing Research Group (NCRG) at Aston is
widely regarded as one of the world's foremost academic research
groups in its field. We are looking for a highly motivated UNIX system
administrator to provide computer support for the Group.

The NCRG currently comprises the following full-time members:

	2 Professors
	3 Lecturers
	11 Postdoctoral Research Fellows
	1 Personal Assistant
	1 Research Programmer
	20 Postgraduate research students

and the Group will continue to grow with new staff and postdoctoral
appointments anticipated in the near future.

The Group is extremely well equipped, with high performance UNIX
workstations (Silicon Graphics Indigo and Indy together with some
Sun-10) for all members of staff and postdocs, while research students
have a mix of workstations and X terminals. In addition, the Group has
its own Silicon Graphics Challenge L multi-processor supercomputer
(currently configured with 4 x R10000 processors and 512Mb RAM and
expected to be upgraded shortly). The Group has a range of printers
including a 24 ppm high volume duplex laser printer and a high
resolution colour laser printer. Finally there are some notebook PCs,
Macs and a scanner which may require occasional maintenance.
All of the computer hardware is less than three years old, and is
continually being extended through ongoing investment. The Group has
its own Ethernet LAN which is bridged from other Departmental and
University computers.

The successful candidate will be solely responsible for maintaining
and developing the hardware and software resources of the Group and
will need to be highly self-motivated. They will play a key role in
purchasing decisions and in determining the strategic direction for
the provision of computer resources to the Group. They will also be
responsible for providing a reliable backup of the system and for
maintaining the Group's web pages to a high standard.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years relevant experience,
with knowledge of the UNIX operating system, C or C++, Perl, shell
scripts, HTML and LaTeX.

Conditions of Service
---------------------

The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years, with the
possibility of subsequent renewal.

Initial salary will be up to 21,519 (UK pounds) depending on
experience. The post is available from 1 January 1997.
