Also, if you were to compare the first year that the U of Michigan 
basketball players wore the "baggy shorts" to the other teams in the 
NCAA, you would see that the U of M were set apart from the others.  They 
may not have been the best team in the country, but they were seen as the 
more charismatic.
If different coloured jerseys were only for the referee's benefit, all 
teams would be given the same 2 sets of uniforms....one white (home) and 
one black (away):)
