This -short- answer illustrates a long term smalltalker opinion about Java,
please no flame :-) :

JAVA is a Smalltalk-80 like language (ie almost only objects, byte-code 
interpreted & garbage collected) with the C++ syntax. 
It is designed at the origin to be used on the Internet (ie special 
communications skills included).
HotJava is a web browser written with Java.
