Hi everyone,

First post here, so please forgive any apparent stupidity!

We are runnig SGI's in a music production setting.

We are trying to setup a GUI for integrating all the audio
apps (mix, csound, mxv, etc...) on the machines. This involves a lot of
calls to unix to launch and kill various apps. All this is controlled
from buttons and such.

We are new to Smalltalk. We have been playing around with Smalltalk/X
for a couple of weeks and are slowly learning the intricacies of the
language and have prototyped a quite nice interface. We ARE having
problems controlling the unix level..but we'll find a way!

The questions are as follows:

1- Is Smalltalk/X, in the opinion of this group, a good choice,
or are we better off with VisualWorks?

2- Since we'll spend the summer working on this, we'd hate to find out
that we can't compile to an executable running without the smalltalk
image. Smalltalk/X doc is cryptic on this point. Is VisualWorks a sure
   bet as far as compiling?

3- Does anyone know the educational cost for a ParkPlace VisualWorks licence
that includes the compiler? or the e-mail for ParkPlace?

Thanks a M
