I can't give you empirical evidence, but I can give you a marketing data point:
I have a Cobol shop, and the only languages that appear as viable
alternatives are Visual Basic and Smalltalk. If Dylan were real today I would
strongly prefer it. But it is far from ready yet and so will miss our boat,
and many others.
