Am I missing something here?  I seem to recall that _both_ = and == are
valid functions, they just test for different types of equality; eg ==
tests for "same storage location" and = tests for "same value", a la
LISP (eq x y) vs. (equal x y).  See chapter 5 of the DIRM, on
comparisons...  Or perhaps I misread it...
