Following non-interactive, command-driven and graphical- interactive sytems, virtual environments now allow an easy-to- understand presentation and more intuitive interaction with computer internal worlds. Simulation, presentation and interaction is required in realtime. The integration of visual, auditory and further stimuli are evidently needed in future man maschine interaction. The first generation of peripherals and software systems for building virtual environments like gloves, helmets and commercial packages are widely available now. The use of these tools in many applications is now under evaluation. Current research in this area is established at various levels of immersion and interaction - from desktop virtual reality to fully immersive systems. Research activities aim to overcome the limitations and to improve the acceptance of the techniques. New paradigms in future computer supported communication are already under development. Applications, now, are undertaking the first steps by adapting system prototypes to virtual environments. The accuracy, usability and effectiveness of this new technology is investigated. The particular goal of this event is to identify the key research work and to stimulate application areas to use of Virtual Environment techniques. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop Programme 9:00 Welcome Martin Goebel, Danielle Tost 9:10 Invited Paper Steve Bryson Why Application Development is So Hard - Virtual Reality is a Research Field! 9:40 1.
