Well, here in UK, Maplin Electronics ( in Southend HQ, The Leeds shop number is
+44 113 244 9200) do a kit which is standalone and can record up to 30 seconds
of speech into a 64K sram. The controller chup is very cheap ( about 5 quid)
and will easily interface to a microcontroller.
I believe the part was UMC5200 but it was a while back.
Phone the Leeds shop and ask them - they're good blokes.
