I am new to this field, so I hope comeone can take a moment to help me out. I'm
interested in speech compression algorithms and was hoping to learn the anwers to
a couple questions:

What compression algorithm provides the most speech compression without loss of
speech quality? We are sampling 8000 times per second and our data is already
u-law encoded to 8 bits/sample. What algorithm for further compression would be
best?

Where can these algorithms be obtained?

Thanks,
