           VISITING POSITIONS FOR SPEECH RESEARCHERS

            Computer Systems and Communications Group
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, India.

POSTS :

The Computer Systems and Communications Group is looking for
researchers with bright academic record both at the post-doctoral
and senior levels to further strengthen and consolidate its
speech research programme. Positions of visiting fellow, visiting
scientist and visiting professor are open for scientists from
outside India (NRIs as well as others) based on their experience
and contributions to the field. These appointments may be looked
upon either as a) stepping stones to tenure positions in the
institute (for those intending to stay back in India), or as b)
means to establish personal links and interaction with TIFR and
other Indian groups (for those wishing to spend a year or two
here and return to their home base). The honorarium paid for
visiting appointments is more than adequate to cover all local
expenses and accommodation.

THE GROUP :

The CSC Group has been in existence for over forty years and
has built India's first digital computer in the mid-fifties. The
group has been active in the speech area since the early seven-
ties and has made contributions in speech synthesis, speech
recognition, speech perception and speech coding. It is now
recognized as the Nodal Centre for Speech Technology research of
the Knowledge Based Computing Systems (KBCS) project funded by
the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Depart-
ment of Electronics (DOE) of the Government of India.

The research activities of the group include, a) speech
recognition, b) speech synthesis, c) speech signal processing, d)
search algorithms, e) natural language processing, f) cursive
script recognition and synthesis, g) coding techniques, h) paral-
lel processing and development of high-speech interconnection
network i) real-time systems, j) development of architecture
compiler and k) computer visualization.

The group has extensive research facilities including i) a
cluster of several Sparc 10 and VAX workstations and PC 486 and
386s, ii) a speech data acquisition system and a `KAY' speech
analysis workstation. In addition, the researchers can make use
of the institutes' central computing facilities including a DEC
Alpha cluster consisting of AXP 3000/800s and 4000/720s.

THE INSTITUTE :

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in an autonomous
government funded research institution that has established
itself in the international arena in nuclear science, mathemat-
ics, computer science, molecular biology, radio astronomy and
science education over the last five decades and will soon be
celebrating its Golden Jubilee.

The institute is located in the southern most tip of the
long island of Bombay and is surrounded by the sea on three sides
and is only two miles from downtown Bombay (including the finan-
cial, business and cultural centres). The surroundings are com-
pletely free of noise, pollution and crowds normally found in
large cities. On-campus accommodation will be available with
modern amenities for the visiting scientists. The institute runs
free bus services to downtown Bombay and the local rail termi-
nals.
