Bill,

I have been looking at some low cost, very small proximity sensors
from Keyence. They can be easilly set-up with a very tight hysteresis.
You might want to see if this is what you are looking for.  They also
have several series of very small photoelectric sensors (IR and Laser)
that are reflective or thrubeam types.  Hope this helps.
