Your best bet is to use industrial timing belt (Gates or
Brecoflex). It is very durable and can be modified w/ cleats for
increased traction. However, purchasing industrial belt is extremely
expensive. From $200 for a 100" double-sided belt or up to $400 for
belt w/ special cleats. Again, these are general prices per belt. For a
serious project it's about the best way to go as many sizes and lengths
are available. Doubled or tripled chain may work in smaller
applications.
