* Electronic Doorman Recognises Faces 
  Security at a chain of 17 casinos has been improved by the use of an 
  "electronic doorman" that can recognise faces.
                                                
* Good Vibes for Deaf-Blind
  People who are both deaf and blind will soon enjoy new freedom with a 
  picket-size sound recognition system that can tell them when the door bell, 
  telephone or smoke alarm is ringing.

* Faster Processing of Weather-Sat Pictures
  The accuracy of weather forecasts is to be further improved by a new 3.5 
  million British-developed computer programme that will process pictures 
  as they are received from a meteorogical satellite and within minutes pass 
  them to national mateorogical services.
  
* Making Chips With X-Rays
  A British research laboratory's key role in the design of a machine that
  is enabling the giant American IBM computer company to research the
  manufacture of sophisticated silicon chip devices has been recognised
  with royalties of 401,000.

* Now AI Targets the Offshore Oil Industry
  The next field of opportunity for computy systems that learn by experience 
  could be at the bottom of the North Sea, according to a UK oil company
  expert.
