I'd have to say, "what".  As much as I ridicule the work of lunatics like
this one, I do somewhat admire their drive and conviction.  After all--as
many of these people will tell you repeatedly--many great innovators were
called "lunatics" when they first presented their ideas.  (They neglect to
mention that an even greater number of garden-variety lunatics have been
called "lunatics" as well.)  Without the Nylands and Churchwards of the
world, you don't get the Sasurres and Chomskys.  They can be a noisome
by-product, to be sure, but that's what they are:  a by-product of our
need to explain everything, to question established thought, and not to
rest until the truth sees the light.

In other words, there but for the grace of G-d...
