It amazes me that this thread could go on as long as it has without
anyone even mentioning Grice.  He noticed a couple of interesting
things about the logic of "and" and "but" a few years back (1960's).
There are several relevant papers published in his collection _Studies
in the way of words_. Working your way up to the present, you would
probably end up with the latest version of Jim McCawley's linguistic
logic text.
