I apologize for the multiple postings, but my editor hates me, and
this is very important.
I need help in understanding the application of the agentive noun
formative -areis in Gothic. The OED says that weak verbs formed with -jan
stood related in sense to agentive nouns, and that -areis formations
served as the agent nouns until -areis became the agentive nound formative.
What I'm missing is _why_ -areis was analogically related to the
-jan formations and their relation to agentive function. Is the -areis
originally a marker for nouns derived from -jan formations? Gothic grammars
are sparse and less than helpful in this matter. Any help would be appreciated.
