There have been several proposals made in this group to use ASCII characters
to transcribe IPA symbols, one of them by yours truly.

In Greek, aspirated (|), (-), >< developed to fricatives.
In Latin, these were transcribed as ph, th and ch in Greek
loanwords: (aspirated) stops in early Latin, fricatives in 
late Latin.
